Keep Hall Beautiful is a nonprofit organization that is affiliated with both Keep America Beautiful and Keep Georgia Beautiful. We use a two pronged approach in accomplishing its projects. We have hands on projects where volunteers are utilized to do community cleanups, litter control, beautification projects, remove junk cars, clean illegal dumpsites and work with the environmental court and state and local agencies to help clean unkempt properties.

We have three employees who devote forty hours per week to picking up roadside litter, cleaning illegal dumpsites and unkempt properties and to add more beautification projects. Since July 2002, our personnel has picked up 16,535 bags of litter, collected 108.44 tons of debris that could not be bagged and properly disposed of, and 1,445 old tires. They have cleaned five illegal dumpsites, five unkempt properties and devoted 300 man-hours to beautification projects.

Our telephone book recycling event netted over 15 tons of telephone books, and thirteen City and County Schools participated in this year’s Environmental Achievement Award program. John Paul Walters, and environmental educator, performed his “No Such Things As Away” program for over 1300 students. We hosted a “Crimes Against the Environment” class for the law enforcement. The “One For The Chipper” campaign netted over 3,000 Christmas trees, saving the public approximately $1,150 in landfill tipping fees and 1,000 cubic yards of landfill space, providing free mulch for Hall County citizens. Keep Hall Beautiful conducts educational programs providing resources and information to help foster attitudes in the community that result in citizens taking responsibility for a cleaner environment, stewardship of natural resources, and improved solid waste management practices for future generations. The end result being a cleaner, safer environment, in which the citizens of Gainesville and Hall County can live, work and play.

The on-going projects in 2003 include:

  • One For The Chipper
  • Earth Day
  • Mule Camp Springs
  • Friends of the Parks Butterfly Release
  • America Recycles Day
  • Environmental Achievement Awards
  • Annual Awards Banquet
  • The Great American Cleanup (a national campaign sponsored by Keep America Beautiful)

We also plan to have another ad campaign in various media regarding litter prevention, recycling and the importance of saving our environment.
